Study Finds WELL Certification Boosts Productivity, Satisfaction & Health

by Joe Scholz, Director

A new study in the Journal of Building and Environment, which included over 1300 responses from six organisations across North America, has discovered that the WELL Building Standard Certification definitively results in benefits across 4 key areas:

  • Occupant satisfaction
  • Perceived health
  • Well-being
  • Productivity

The largest and most comprehensive longitudinal research of its kind, the study was able to analyse feedback of participants within the office both before and after WELL certification.

The results were overwhelmingly positive and showed a series of statistically significant occupant benefits, including:

  • An almost 30% improvement in overall satisfaction with the workplace (42% pre-certification to 70% post-certification).
  • A 26% overall increase in reported well-being scores.
  • A 10% increase in mental health and a 2% increase in physical health.
  • A 10-point increase in median productivity scores.

The study also found it helped occupants feel more energised, more motivated to work and more confident that the workplace is conducive to health as well as an increased sense of pride in being a part of the organization.

“This study shows unequivocally how WELL, with its people-first approach, supports wide-ranging benefits for occupants and organizations alike, creating significant improvements in all-important areas of occupant satisfaction and health, well-being and productivity,” said Rachel Hodgdon, President and CEO, International WELL Building Institute (IWBI).

WELL outlines key building-level interventions and organisational strategies across 10 categories: Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind and Community.

Dr. Wangda Zuo, the author of the study and professor at Pennsylvania State University said “For a long time, the community has been waiting for a systematic evaluation about the effectiveness of WELL in achieving its goals. This study takes a major step forward in helping fill this research gap by providing significant evidence showing the positive impact of WELL Certification.”

We have been big supporters of WELL since its inception and welcome this research which now unequivocally demonstrates that human-centered design strategies within office buildings make a meaningful difference in all key areas of tenant satisfaction.

QED is a WELL Performance Testing Organisation, spearheaded by its own staff of WELL Performance Testing Agents. We undertake Performance Verification of WELL projects in new and existing buildings.
