Ventilation in Schools, Kindergartens and Early Childcare Centres

by Graeme McLeish, Senior Consultant

Ventilation is so important for limiting the spread of COVID-19 indoors. Our team has advised on COVID risk in hospital and office settings, verifying air change metrics and modelling risk at varying occupancy density. We are working on pilot programs for continuous monitoring of ventilation risk in offices.

Victorian authorities are reported here and also here to be considering ventilation monitors in schools. We strongly support this initiative, and believe classroom solutions should be teacher centric, providing real-time information to put them in control of pupil outcomes.

Whilst office and hospital solutions emphasise remote online dashboards, simple in-class monitors might remind teachers to open a door or window, perhaps whilst leaving that split system running for some thermal comfort. Value for money and energy conservation are critical in schools, kindergartens and childcare.

USA guidelines propose investment in air purification (in-class HEPA filter circulation) – it may be too early to recommend this approach in Australian education settings where natural ventilation is usually readily available.

We’re here to help educators with ventilation, by applying our learnings from office and healthcare settings. For more information contact us.
